Nestled in the heart of the Vaucluse region of France, Mas La Barque is a centuries-old Provencal farmhouse whose renovation has preserved and enhanced its charm. Owned by an award-winning architect, Mas La Barque was expanded, restored, and renovated in 2005. The grounds adjacent to the house have been landscaped to include an outdoor terrace, a bocce/boules court, and a large pool with views framed by olive and almond trees. A stream winds alongside the house, framing the 35 acres of farmland, and joining the Sorgue River. The site, the setting, and the house offer a retreat that is quintessentially French. The current house combines the original stone Mas (farmhouse) with a 19th-century barn, whose ceiling beams have been preserved in what is now the main living area. The adjacent kitchen is a well-appointed gathering spot that flows into the spacious dining area. With doors opening out to the terrace, plane trees, and vistas beyond, the entire living area expands for drinks and dining. The private section of the house includes five bedrooms with four and a half baths, two master suites, and an office. All the bedrooms have their share of historic charm—fireplaces, frescoed walls, whitewashed stone, large shuttered windows—but the master bedrooms are especially captivating. The romantic first floor suite is serene with rose-washed walls and crisp white linens on the king sized bed. The huge second floor suite has soaring ceilings, a romantic bath, and a balcony with a view that captures the beauty of the estate. The feel of the house is one of understated elegance and indigenous charm. The furnishings include French and Moroccan antiques that give a comfortable and slightly exotic flavor to the interiors. The exterior is carefully designed to preserve the historic character of the house. If you close your eyes and picture the perfect house in Provence, it would be hard to imagine one better than Mas La Barque.
